Hey everyone. I’m currently in need of hiring a 3d generalist for an upcoming project. For obvious reasons I can’t give too much away, but the job is for 4 months starting May 1st, and it’s exciting as hell. If it’s not for you, please pass this on to anyone you think might be good for it.

I need you to be based in LA and able to work from an office.

I need you to be proficient in Maya. Especially in the area of 3d modeling for characters and sets. It really helps if you are fast at modeling and designing on the fly… you have a good sense of design as well as knowing how to get around the software.

Knowledge of animation, dynamics, basic rigging and MEL scripting are all plusses, this role could involve all of these, but mainly its skills at modeling and design that would help most.

I need you to have experience working in a team and collaborating. I don’t care about age or education. As long as your work is good and you’ve been doing it for a while and have experience playing with others.

Going thru some old files last night - came across this thing I did for no apparent reason in 2003. It’s an alphabet (badly) drawn with a slow exposure camera. I just found this in a old box. Curious if any of you guys have a copy of it?

I released it 5 years ago - it had the longer (~15 minute) version of my first big short RGB XYZ, which I edited down to 12 minutes for festivals. I only made 25 of em and most were sold at pictoplasma. It contained a sticker saying “failure”. Rare!

The Walt Disney Head I originally released in 2009 has been used for hundreds of projects by people all over the world. It’s a popular template model for Makerbot 3d Printers (often uncredited, hint hint, send me a goddamn 3d printer, wink hint wink), seen in many of the example files for the incredible Three.js project, and appeared in several animations such as this, this, this and this.

Basic Animation Aesthetics

Visitor of this website and citizen of the internet, what follows is an extremely long brief intro to my essay “Basic Animation Aesthetics”, dating back to 2009A.D.HD. If you are too lazy to read and just want 2 DL heres a link.

Around 2007 I started to get invited to speak about my work, and found the exercise of writing down my thoughts on animation made it easier to structure them. Those were the days, mind you, when doing low-polygon animation was not a “thing” and to some extent warranted explanation. To my great bewilderment, talking about theory seemed to bore the living soul out of people - so I quickly stopped doing it and went for a more narrative approach to showing things.

A couple of years later, I was asked to write an article for a German magazine called Objects - I put some of my more theoretical thoughts together and structured them around a film I had just finished. I made a point of speaking about animation in the broadest terms, without referencing technology or software. The resulting essay - Basic Animation Aesthetics, spread quicker than I could’ve imagined. Over the years I’ve heard of it being used in at least a dozen animation courses and been a point of inspiration for people in other fields too. I’m really humbled by this and hope it might continue to be useful to people out there.
